Nice Japanese
So I'm walking down the hall today, and some guy talkin' on a cell phone says "Hallo" to me. I say "Hi."
Then he says "Nihongo ga jouzu" (<-- You speak excellent Japanese).
HUH!?!
The only take on this I've go is that he thought I said "hai" which is "yes" in Japanese, but which would not be an appropriate answer to "Hallo" and certainly is no indication of one's ability to speak Japanese.

I've had similar experiences over here. There's an uncle of Nele's who's convinced I understand everything that's being said in the local dialect, because I say "ja" when he says "Alles goed?" (literally - "everything good?).
While I speak proper Dutch, the dialect is far beyond me.. I think you've just got to take the credit when you can - likely there have been more people who've said "And just who the hell is this lanky white guy and his pirate Japanese?" :)
maybe he was still talking to the dude(tte) on the other end of the phone...
;-)
POINTS well TAKEN
